What you need to consider......... Minimize

So you want to bring a Beagle into your life?

Who wouldn't you may ask? After all, here is a breed with an enormous personality that just to look at, is irresistable to almost everyone.

Many, many people have done just this, however there are several things you need to consider BEFORE deciding you want to share your life with a cute, cuddly bundle of Beagle puppy.

When deciding on a new home for their puppies, first and foremost in a dedicated breeders mind is whether this will be a ' forever ' home and the prospective new family are going to be dedicated to giving their puppy a happy, healthy life. Your knowledge of this breed is an important tool you will need to share an enjoyable life together.

Here are some of the things about Beagles you need to be aware of.

* Beagles can have a life span of as many as 15 to 16 years so you have  to be prepared for them to share in your life for the length of theirs.

* Good fencing is a must ! The higher the better and being sunk into the ground or having a mowing strip is preferable for security reasons. A dog proof fence is not necessarily a Beagle proof fence. Beagles are scent hounds which makes them a curious breed. If they think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and there is nothing to keep their interest at home you can almost bet, that's where they'll be headed.  If you don't have secure fencing......A BEAGLE IS NOT THE BREED FOR YOU

AND.....you won't be taking one of my puppies home with you.

Which brings us to the next point.

* Beagles are also a pack hound.  They are happiest when they have company for the majority of the day.  They will consider themselves part of your pack when they become a member of your family and do not usually cope well with being left alone for long periods of time. Most breeders are happier for a puppy to go where this won't be the case. They will thrive on being included in as many of your family activities as possible.

To leave a Beagle puppy to it's own devices for a great length of time is inviting the temptation for it to rearrange your backyard in their quest to quell any boredom.  In these situations they can be destructive.  It won't matter how many fantastic toys you have provided for their amusement if they have to spend all day playing with them by themselves.    That's when they might consider the sprinkler system needs to be moved and your newly planted flowers might look better on the other side of the garden or even serenading the neighbours may seem like a good idea to pass the time.

* Beagles are curious and can be mischievious! The big brown eyes and cute expression of innocence sometimes means they have done something you just haven't found out about yet. If your good Italian leather shoes are on the floor, that's considered Beagle territory and rest assured, they WILL take them.  They have no way of knowing your expensive designer shoes from your old mowing shoes so if you have things you would prefer not to have teeth marks in......don't leave them where they are fair game for a playful puppy.

* Training is a must !  You need to establish boundaries for your puppy from the moment you bring them home.     They have to know where they are allowed to go, what they are allowed to have (or not have) and do (or not do) and get them into a routine as soon as possible. Teaching good habits early will lead to a more relaxed relationship for everyone.

Beagles can be headstrong and defiant.     Training sessions may well turn into a frustrating battle of 'who will give in first'.  Don't bet on it being your Beagle.    Patience is a key factor when training your puppy.

If you don't have the PATIENCE of a Saint ( and/or a very good sense of humour ) .......... A BEAGLE IS PROBABLY NOT THE BREED FOR YOU.    They respond well to a gentle but at the same time, firm hand, lovingly applied.

** PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL IS STRONGLY ADVISED **

Always start out as you mean to continue because as they are a highly intelligent breed, they will be one step ahead of you and have you wrapped around their little paw in no time at all without at least some basic training.

A well trained Beagle with good manners is a joy to live with.

* Beagles are active dogs that will enjoy walks snooping around the neighbourhood, running the length and breadth of the off leash park or beach and playing as many games as you can keep up with.   If you are not prepared or unable to be a participant in some form of interaction with your dog.......A BEAGLE IS PROBABLY NOT THE BREED FOR YOU

Beagles can't help but weave their way into peoples hearts with their affectionate nature, outgoing personality and funloving antics.

They are a breed which deserve a life time of your devotion...just like you will get in return.

If you are planning to bring a Beagle into your home please make it a forever home.     You will get back the love you give, ten fold.
